Neck Pain

With the increasing use of computers, laptops, and tablets, neck pain has become a widespread issue, second only to back pain. It can result from strain on various tissues, including muscles, ligaments, and joints. In some instances, nerves and intervertebral discs may also contribute to the discomfort. In such circumstances, pain, numbness or weakness may be felt down the arm into the hand.

An acute episode of neck pain may present as a sharp, stabbing sensation, making neck movements very uncomfortable, or it might feel like a constant, dull ache, accompanied by headaches at the base of the skull.

Common causes of neck pain include poor desk posture and ergonomics, sleeping or sitting in awkward positions for prolonged periods, anxiety and stress, heavy lifting, and age-related changes such as osteoarthritis.

'Hands-on' therapy, including massage, spinal manipulation and mobilisation, acupuncture as well as postural advice, can help alleviate symptoms and improve the management of neck pain.
