Frequently Asked Questions
If you have a question that is not answered in this section, please ring 01228 524701 and speak to one of our receptionists. If they cannot answer your question immediately they will consult with one of the osteopaths and will ring you back with the answer.
What is osteopathy?
Osteopaths are manual therapists meaning we use our hands to help your body repair itself naturally without drugs or surgery. We are trained to treat patients of all ages, from babies and children to the elderly.
Osteopaths diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions. Our assessments are based on the principle that the structure and function of the body are intimately linked. If the structure of the body is not balanced and healthy, then the wellbeing of the individual may be affected.
Our aim is to restore your body’s state of balance by using a range of techniques including joint manipulation, stretching and massage plus other more subtle techniques such as cranial osteopathy.
Osteopathic care may also include onward referral, health management advice and exercise therapy.
Are osteopaths regulated in the UK?
All osteopaths in the UK are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC). Osteopaths are required to renew their registration each year which provides registrants with an annual licence to practise. As part of this process, the GOsC checks that osteopaths have current professional indemnity insurance, remain in good health and of good character, and have met mandatory continuing professional development requirements.
Do I need to be referred by my GP first?
You do not need to consult with your GP prior to seeking Osteopathic treatment in the UK. There may be situations when we suggest we contact your GP but would discuss this with you before doing so.
What should I expect at my first consultation?
We start with listening to your case history which gives you time to explain your complaint, symptoms, concerns and goals.
This is followed by a physical assessment which includes observing your posture and movements to see how it looks to us and feels to you. Afterwards, we carry out a detailed examination of the problem area and any parts which may affect your condition.
We then explain our the diagnosis and prognosis. Possibly referring you to another health professional should this be needed. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and be listened to.
In the majority of cases and with your consent, you will receive effective treatment tailored to your individual needs. This may be treating the affected area and other parts of the body which may contribute to the problem.
If appropriate, prescribed exercises may be given to speed up your recovery and to prevent the problem returning.
What do I need to wear for my treatment?
As osteopaths, we usually assess the whole body to help identify all areas that need treating. Therefore, we may ask you to remove your top or trousers to be able to see and assess the areas of your body which are problematic. If you prefer, you could bring some shorts or loose/ comfortable clothing to wear. If you would like to see an osteopath of the same sex, please tell the receptionist when you make the appointment.
What treatment is carried out?
The techniques osteopaths use include physical manipulation, stretching, soft tissue massage and cranial osteopathy to improve the function of your musculoskeletal framework and relieve muscle tension to help your body’s own healing mechanisms. Some of our osteopaths are also trained in medical acupuncture and may use this technique to complement our osteopathic treatment. We also provide advice on posture and exercise that aim to promote health and prevent symptoms recurring.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments you will need depends on a number of factors including your health and condition. The most appropriate treatment plan will be discussed in your consultation and our aim is to keep the number of appointments to a minimum. When it is thought your condition is unlikely to respond to osteopathic treatment, we will advise you on other possible options or look to refer you for more appropriate treatment or for further investigation.
Are the any side-effects to treatment?
Our patients usually start to feel better either immediately or within a day or two. However, you may experience slight discomfort during treatment or feel post treatment tiredness or tenderness for a day or two. This is a normal and healthy response to treatment. If this discomfort persists or feels excessive during or after treatment, do not hesitate to let us know so we can work a way forward together.
Do you take health insurance?
We can provide treatment for several but not all private health insurers. Please contact us prior to your appointment and we will provide you with more information.
What should I do if I have concerns about the treatment I received?
All our osteopaths are registered with the General Osteopathic Council, and we work in accordance with the osteopathic practice standards. In the unlikely event you feel dissatisfied with the level of care you have received by any of our practitioners please:
-
Speak directly to the osteopath concerned or to the principal, Navin Arora, to explain your concerns and we will aim to help you.
