OSTEOPATHIC CONSULTATION
What we do as osteopaths:
Osteopaths aim to help your body repair itself naturally without drugs or surgery. Instead of treating symptoms (for example, pain or stiffness), we try to find and treat the causes of those symptoms. Then, using techniques including massage, articulation and manipulation:

We get it working normally again

We treat other parts of the body that may contribute to the problem

And we give you tips and exercises to prevent the problem coming back

We may, with your permission, wish to discuss your problem with your doctor
What happens when you arrive:
Our first consultation with you is the most important. For this reason we have prepared information to let you know what to expect.
The first part of the consultation is hearing your story about the symptoms you have, how they began and how they have progressed since the problem started. We will ask you questions to get more detail of the history of your complaint.
We will then examine you and this usually starts with looking at your standing posture and movements to see how it looks to us and feels to you. This is followed by a detailed examination of the problem area and any parts which may affect your condition.
Having come to a conclusion about what is causing your symptoms we will discuss treatment options and whether we think we can help.
If we agree to treat your condition we will usually have allowed time to give some treatment in this consultation.
TREATMENT
We work with our hands, using different techniques techniques tailored to the needs of each patient. Treatment methods include:
- Soft tissue massage
- Passive repetitive stretching
- Joint manipulation
- Cranial osteopathy - gentle pressure that encourages the release of stresses throughout the body, including the head and sacrum
- Acupuncture - We have trained in Medical Acupuncture and frequently use it in conjunction with osteopathic treatment.
All treatment is discussed with you before we start so that you can be informed about what we would like to do and give you the opportunity to discuss our proposals.
During the treatment we do our best to make you feel at ease and tell you what we are doing, and why we are doing it.

PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE
Many private health insurances now cover osteopathic treatment. Insurance schemes vary widely in what they cover. Some will only pay when your doctor or a consultant has referred you, so it is worth checking your policy. When you choose a new policy, ask if it covers osteopathic treatment.
Please let us know if private heath insurance will be covering the cost of your treatment so that we can discuss any particular requirements of that company.
